SUMMARY
Legal issues can be a headache to take on especially if you do not have the resources to seek help from a lawyer. While there is a fine line between legal advice and legal information, we believe public libraries can serve as legal justice centers to identify legal issues and deliver legal information to people facing legal issues. We explored how a partnership between the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Penn Carey Law School can offer solutions to increasing access to legal information.

How might we leverage public libraries as a community to provide legal information and empower those facing legal issues?
How might we leverage public libraries as a community to provide legal information and empower those facing legal issues?
Every year, low-income individuals face legal issues that they may not be aware of until it becomes a larger problem. And even if they do seek our help, 92% of these people feel like they do not receive adequate help. Your income, your zip code, etc. should not be a barrier to receive the legal help you need.

A platform to connect legal aid seekers with legal aid providers who are looking for pro-bono work.
Marketing campaign strategy to get the word out about legal resources and programs at the library.

This project challenged me to think beyond an app or a physical product as a solution. We really centered the whole project around research and learning about the legal issues that the Philadelphia community face every day. It was a great experience being able to talk to so many different stakeholders and co-creating solutions with their expertise.
Designing ways for how libraries can serve as a legal aid center combined my interest in innovation, community programming, and equity/justice. I'm excited to continue being a part of the Free Library community and contributing to making Philadelphia a more equitable and accessible place for all.
Thank you to the many lawyers, paralegals, legal advocates, Free Library of Philadelphia staff, law professors, and community members that took the time to share their knowledge and feedback with us. And thank you to my teammates Sanchi and Gustell for taking on this project together. Grateful for all the late nights, laughs, and trips around Philly visiting legal clinics.
